Balboa becomes Barry as he nds new home

HE WAS once Balboa the street- wise scrapper from Maidstone’s meaner streets.

Today, he’s Barry the much-

loved moggie in a smart two-bed semi in Downswood. It was thanks, in part, to Downs

Mail that the RSPCA rescue cat no one wanted found a home with British Gas engineer Jonathan Dinley (49) and his daughter Poppy (20).

He would not have been every-

one’s choice – five years old, eight pounds in weight with a wonky ear.

But when our online news ser-

vice highlighted the RSPCA’s ef- forts to find him a home, the cat-loving Dinleys felt they would fit the bill.

Jonathan said: “Poppy was

going through local news online and saw the Downs Mail piece. She showed it to me and we de- cided to put our names forward.

Our Salon is Covid compliant

“We did an interview and after a few checks, he is with us and he loves it.”

It is three years since the death

of their previous cat – a Battersea rescue cat they adopted at nine years old.

Jonathan added: “He was such a character and it was so hard to replace a cat like that. I wasn’t so sure I wanted the tie of another cat.

“But Barry’s lovely and settling

in well. He follows you around constantly, is very vocal, loves his food and he’ll be sitting on you the minute you sit down. “We’ve been making sure there’s always someone around. He’s locked in at the moment and they say you should do it for about six weeks, but I don’t think he’ll last that long. “He’s itching to get outside as he’s made friends with the cat next door through the gap in an open window.”

An RSPCA spokesman said:

“We’re delighted they are all get- ting on so well.”
