downsmail.co.uk Get the garden summer-ready!
WITH sunnier and warmer days to come, now is the busiest time of year for gardens and gardeners. As the days get longer, getting
into the garden becomes more of a pleasure, less of a chore. The smell of newly-cut grass is an exciting promise of picnics and lazy summer days. But plants follow their own patterns, not always the calen- dars on our wall. Reflecting freshness and emerg-
ing life, the garden heralds a transi- tion from winter woes to youthful exuberance, stirring the gardener in almost all of us. Now is the perfect time to start en-
joying your garden endeavours. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beginnings of life in the garden, but make sure you get on top of those challenges before they blossom. l Select and plant your annuals. l Prune and re-shape garden plants, bushes and trees. l Attack weeds before they invade. l Stock containers with young seedlings. l And get the lawnmower serviced before you need it!-
Still time to get growing
IT’S not too late to plant out some crops so that you can enjoy an au- tumn harvest. You don’t need an allotment or even a large garden to get a veg-
etable patch going, and many of the salad crops are just as happy growing in pots and containers. For the novice gardener why not start with a few tomato and straw-
berry plants? They are easy to look after, need minimal attention but can produce an abundance of fruit.
