• Ask a learner to read the career information to the class and have a discussion on this.

• Talk about the role of the micro-organisms in each of the pictures in the activity and then match the careers to the pictures.

Background knowledge

There are numerous careers that require knowledge of micro-organisms. These include scientists, specialist doctors, forensic scientists, brewers and veterinarians.

Assessment guidelines • This activity is intended for informal assessment. • Encourage each learner in the groups to contribute to the discussion. • Points for discussion: o Micro-organisms form part of healthy soil. They help to turn matter back into

nutrients, making them available for plant use. By understanding how micro- organisms affect soil quality, we can improve our methods of food production and land conservation.

o Many human and plant diseases are caused by micro-organisms. By studying what causes disease, scientists can discover ways to protect us and our plants, especially food crops. Vaccines are one way to protect humans against disease.

o Micro-organisms cause food to go rotten. Food preservation is a large industry, including scientists who create chemical preservatives and engineers who design refrigerators.

o We can use micro-organisms to clean water. The waste products and pollutants are sifted out of the water, then bacteria are used to break down the pollutants further.
