How technology is easing the return of music venues

By Oliver Rowbory,

It is clear that the hospitality industry has not had the easiest of years. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit restaurants, music venues, and retailers harder than it has any other business. Now, even with the effects of the pandemic finally easing, the industry faces a new challenge: reopening in line with the remaining restrictions in the safest and most efficient way possible.

One thing that has become clear during the pandemic is the vital importance of technology in maintaining a sense of normality during the ups and downs of lockdown. When shops and restaurants first closed their doors, electronic point of sale (EPOS) systems and click and collect capabilities proved essential for allowing the hospitality industry to stay in business.

Now, as restrictions ease, venues are once again turning to EPOS systems to ensure a seamless transition back to business. When planning reopenings, investing in the right technology can make a huge difference to the experience of the customer. For example, rather than having separate systems in place for booking tickets, table ordering, and drinks, venues can now create a cashless, one-stop-shop for all needs.

This not only benefits customers, but can also make a huge difference for the companies themselves. Mobile ordering and contactless collection capabilities keep staff safe and the notably faster transactions allow venues to carry out more payments at once, cutting waiting times, as well as keeping reliable records of purchase history.

Many businesses are now taking EPOS one step further, coming up with creative solutions to maximise their ability to provide experiences for customers under ongoing restrictions. Costa Del Tottenham, for instance, has partnered with Goodtill by Sumup to create ‘table service’ DJ events, allowing it to resume a huge majority of its events throughout the coming months. This is a great first step to the reopening of gigs. Using EPOS allows social distancing to be maintained as people enjoy the music, while simultaneously retaining the ability to serve food and drink — an essential part of any music venue’s revenue.

For an industry whose customer base will soon find itself flooded with options, it is more important than ever to stand out from the crowd. EPOS systems not only keep customers safe in the current environment, but when used effectively create a much more accessible and enticing experience.
