But at The Porterbrook Care Home in Sheffield, their residents continue to lead happy, healthy and positive lives in the comfortable home-from-home setting. Over the last year, residents have been keeping busy and staying safe, with the team of compassionate staff providing exceptional care throughout the pandemic. They were one of the first care homes in the city to vaccinate every resident with both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. The Porterbrook specialises in caring for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease so it has been imperative for staff to keep a routine in times when family visits have had to be limited.

Residents have enjoyed seed planting – with chillies, strawberries and sunflowers some of this year’s plants of choice – lots of quizzes and games of bingo on their interactive touchscreen table, plus outdoor visits from singer Paul Barrie performing popular hits from favourite stars of old including Elvis Presley, Matt Monro and Nat King Cole. The Porterbrook care home

manager Sheilagh Sweeney said: “It has been wonderful to see Paul. His performances bring back fond memories for our residents of days gone by and listening to music is proven to boost cognitive behaviour. We had speakers set up inside the main lounge so residents could hear it all and didn’t miss a word.” As restrictions eased, The

Porterbrook added a Covid-proof visitor pod on the ground floor to enable family and friends to see their loved ones through a vinyl screen and partition. This remains an added bonus now that each resident is allowed two regular visitors into the care home following lateral flow tests and the use of PPE. With the warmer weather on the horizon, residents will be getting ready for more time spent on the mezzanine balcony for tea and scones overlooking the grounds. For all this and more, staff

continue to receive merited feedback and praise from residents’ relatives, gaining a 9.1 rating on leading care home review website, carehome. co.uk. Families have admired and appreciated their selfless dedication throughout these difficult circumstances; knowing their loved ones are well cared for, protected and enjoying life has been the peace of mind they have needed.
