News A club tribute
to dad Robin A YOUTH football club is taking on a virtual fundraising challenge in memory of a player’s father who died from COVID-19. K-Sports Colts under 10s club in Ditton have already walked thousands of miles to raise money in memory of Robin Barnes, which will go to children’s char- ity UNICEF.
Accompanied by a parent, the
players will clock up as many miles as they can by taking walks locally.
So far, they have covered 1,200 miles.
Club manager Anthony White said: “Robin was a truly lovely man who would do anything for anyone and we would love to complete this challenge in mem- ory of him. “UNICEF was close to Robin’s heart and we would like to thank everyone for your kind support for such a great cause. Your dona- tions are greatly appreciated.” To donate go to www.justgiv-

Waste left a month ‘is a breach of contract’
FURIOUS residents have accused Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) of “breaching its contract” after their bags of rubbish were not collected for over a month. Retired Marguerite Abbott (68) claims she has contacted the coun- cil “endless times” to no avail. The residents, who live at the edge of a buffer zone serviced by a small road which links top and bottom with the main Willington Street carriageway, want an expla- nation as to why the service has worsened over the last 15 months. Cllr Eddie Powell says it is most unfair that taxpayers are not get- ting their rubbish collected due to the “utter selfishness of others”. Mrs Abbott, who has lived in
Willington Street for 47 years, says she keeps getting told by MBC the road has “no access”, despite a refuse lorry being able to collect garden waste on time fortnightly. She said: “Occasionally there
Residents Marguerite Abbott, Michael Pantony and Lesley Pantony with Cllr Eddie Powell
might be a car parked towards the end of the road, but a lorry can still get past or stop on the main road.” Neighbour Ann-Marie Palmer
(49) said: “This has been ongoing for at least 15 months. It just seems like our local council is in breach of their contract to us residents.” An MBC spokesman said incon- siderate parking had increased over the last 12 months as more
people work from home. The spokesman added: “Where
the waste collection contractor is unable to gain access they are re- quired to photograph and record any issues on the electronic system. “They are required to retry the
waste collection later the same day or early the next. If that fails our contractor will task a smaller vehi- cle to make the collection.”
