Postmaster claim ‘should be more’

LAWYERS for a former sub-post- master are now working on a claim against the Post Office (PO) for malicious prosecution and damage to his reputation. But Kanagasundaram Prince (68)

is angry the claim for the huge fi- nancial losses he sustained is not much more. Mr Prince worked at Tovil for

seven years and was accused by the Post Office of stealing £43,000. His legal representatives ulti-

mately advised him to plead guilty and pay £43,000 to avoid a six- month prison sentence, which the judge suspended. Family loans saved him. The trained accountant was re-

moved from the branch, which went on the market and sold at a £50,000 loss when the PO threat- ened to withdraw their part of the business. It was later found a faulty new computer system had bugs and produced incorrect figures. The

judge called for mediation and the Post Office agreed a £57.8m settle- ment, but £45m went in postmas- ters’ legal costs. The PO faces a massive compen-

sation bill in the biggest legal and financial scandal of its type and there are suggestions Government should now pay. Mr Prince said: “I have lost so

much through the fine, legal costs, my job, career and more. I have re- ceived so little to date. It has been an awful time. “Unfortunately, our High Court solicitors struck a rotten deal with the PO, whereby all our loss of business was included in the set- tlement.” Mr Prince estimates his losses to

be in the hundreds of thousands of pounds. He and his wife Theresa, who worked with him at Tovil, still have many friends and supporters in Maidstone, who were shocked by accusations against him.

Sarah’s killing sparks village demonstration

MEMBERS of Leeds Women’s Institute and villagers held a demonstra- tion highlighting the issue of violence against women. It was sparked by the recent alleged murder of Sarah Everard, whose

remains were discovered near Ashford, Kent. Men and children joined the women on the short march through the village on March 19. WI President Louise Menenes-Bautista said: “I think a lot of people

were affected by the killing of Sarah Everard and we wanted to high- light the dangers faced by women on the streets.” Pictured here are Jane Newsome, Samantha Irvine, Emily Irvine, Pri-
