News Health boss

set to retire KENT County Council's public health director is to retire as the country is due to come out of lockdown.

Andrew Scott-Clark has de-

cided to step down from his high- profile role after eight years at County Hall.

The former NHS worker said: "It has been a pleasure to work here. I think we have come a long way in a short time and I wish ev- erybody the best for the future." During the pandemic he has be-

come a familiar face in the Press and television as he provided re- assuring guidance on the COVID- 19 crisis.

Run for Rob MORE than £5,000 has been

Engine shed plan ‘is nally progressing’

MOVES to secure a grade II-listed property in Bearsted for commu- nity use are advancing. Conservative county councillor Sir

Paul Carter says negotiations be- tween the parish council and Net- work Rail are progressing well. Bearsted Parish council has been

trying to secure the disused engine shed and coal yard, which date back to the 1870s for community use. It could be converted into amenities and provide a permanent home for Bearsted Library, which is currently housed in temporary space at the rail station.

Cllr Carter told Downs Mail:

"We’ve found someone at Network Rail who is more receptive to the idea. We're getting things moving. "We have spent a long time getting nowhere on this project, but it ap- pears the parish council is now in more meaningful discussions, so it's looking encouraging."

Cllr Carter added that the Ware

Street building's roof had been re- paired, and is no longer causing damage to the rafters. The Downs Mail reported on the parish council's ambitions almost two years ago, but there were con- cerns that Network Rail may need to maintain access through the site. The parish council has made clear its in- tention to buy the site.

According to Bearsted parish council minutes, there are two major projects in progress. A spokesman said one, ‘project C’,

which was discussed in closed ses- sion with public and Press excluded in February, referred to the coal yard. At an extraordinary meeting of the

full council, it was agreed to set aside £5,000 for a feasibility study, survey and outline plans.

The council refused to confirm what ‘project A’ is but it was dis- cussed in January in closed session, with no details in the minutes. A contract was awarded to Tonbridge- based landscaping business, Purple Arbour.
