Tony, 80, to raise charity cash with great home run
AN 80-year-old Maidstone Rotar- ian, often in pain after three hip replacement operations, is to walk in the shadows of Britain’s most famous charity fundraiser, the late Captain Sir Tom Moore. Tony Hodges, pictured, a Rotar- ian for 35 years and a former Dis- trict Governor, is to walk 100 yards to the end of his Pickering Street, Loose, garden no less than 50 times in April.
Like Captain Tom, Tony served
in the Royal Air Force as an acting sergeant and was awarded three national service medals. The father of two, who has lived in Maidstone for more than 50 years with his wife Carole, said: “I was inspired by Captain Tom to do something for local charities. We are very limited to what we can do and this pan- demic has severely affected dona- tions. I thought 50 times was a reasonable target for me, bearing in mind I am not a youngster any- more.”
News Park ‘boom’
COBTREE Manor Park has boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the golf course and neighbouring Kent Life have been closed and face financial chal- lenges as they plan to re-open. Maidstone Borough Council re-
ports the park continues to be busy and car park income to the end of February was £115,015, more than double the budget of £53,119.
Cobtree Café has remained open as a takeaway and has been busy.
During closure, the golf course
has been maintained by Mytime Active, with members tending flower beds, varnishing benches, and weeding bunkers.

Rotarian Andy Brading said: “Tony’s sterling efforts are part of a larger event being run by the club. “Physical and mental well-being
have taken a real hit through the pandemic and this is our way of en- couraging people to be more active and helping to support some excel- lent local charities.” The April event has 16 entries, so
far, ranging from Tony walking up and down his garden to another el- derly member doing the equivalent of a run up Mount Everest. Tony, a part-time pharmaceutical consultant, has named his chal- lenge the “great home run” and do- nations can be made on

weeks of disruption as a pipeline is installed to supply safe drink- ing water. The water main will be laid
along Milebush Lane, Battle Lane, Goudhurst Road and Thorn Road. Work starts on Tuesday, April 13. Diversions will be signposted for the duration of the works.
