Village welcomes new store after 10-year wait
THE new Sainsbury's supermar- ket has finally opened its doors in Staplehurst.
Construction of the 18,000sq ft superstore took more than 10 years to get started and about seven months to complete. The store was officially opened
by Cllr Paddy Riordan, chairman of Staplehurst Parish Council, who cut a ribbon in the car park on March 24.
The supermarket, which re-
placed several industrial properties in Station Approach, includes a bakery, pizza counter, a homeware section, stationery products and an Argos counter. It is the first store opened by the retail chain this year. Store manager Kwadwo Osei greeted the first customers through the doors, handing out commemo- rative bags designed by six-year- old Eden Beevor to eager shoppers. Property director Patrick Dunne
said he was especially proud that a number of young people from the village were entering the work- force for the first time. Mr Dunne said: “We’re very pleased to share this much-antici- pated store with the community. "Thank you,
Staplehurst, for
your support and patience as we delivered this store safely and effi- ciently.”
Cllr Riordan said: “The commu-
nication with the parish council on this store has been excellent and helped us keep residents informed throughout the build.”
Local borough and parish coun- cillor John Perry said: “I’ve always supported this new Sainsbury’s store and eagerly awaited this day. “I’m pleased to see this level of
investment made in our village and know it will make a difference to so many in our community.”
