Garden village plan ‘a travesty’

PLANNING proposals for a gar- den village at Binbury Park, on Detling Hill, dominated discus- sions at Thurnham’s online parish council meeting on Monday, March 15.

Meetings normally held on the third Monday of each month at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel. Public welcome.

CHAIRMAN: Daniel Skinner CLERK: Sherrie Babington 01634 867173

Keep in touch CHAIRMAN Daniel Skinner ex-

pressed concerns about the lack of public communication with the parish council. He was concerned the difficulty getting public feedback suggested the public didn’t have enough knowledge of what is happening in the parish. Cllr Dunlop said people had enough on their plates with the pandemic to worry about local council participation.

The proposals for 1,750 houses, submitted by Quinn Estates, are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), but could help Maidstone Borough Council meet Government housing targets. Gary Bryant and Phil Woods, rep- resentatives from Detling and Stock- bury parish councils, put forward passionate arguments for objection to the plans.

They said any development would have a “disastrous impact” on traffic flow and that current in- frastructure struggles to cope and a development of the proposed num- bers would bring the A249 and sur- rounding lanes to gridlock. The overriding objection was de-

velopment in an Area of Outstand- ing Natural Beauty.

Phil Woods said: “Once you start building in an AONB, you have a serious problem.” Cllr Daniel Skinner recognised the need for additional housing in the south east, but accepted all argu- ments against the proposals. Cllr Michael Stark said: “There

have been many objections, includ- ing from Kent Downs AONB, His- toric England, Campaign to protect Rural England and the Woodland Trust. I am against it.” Cllr John Horne feared that the proposed development means building on the water catchment area of the local aquifer. He said: “It’s a travesty. All the reasons are against this application.” Cllrs Geeta Dunlop and Ian Shel- ley agreed traffic and development of the AONB were the vital issues. A rejection of the proposals was voted for and it was agreed to make individual and joint written objec- tions from Thurnham and neigh- bouring parish councils.

Tribute paid CLLR John Horne advised the

council that Gary Thomas, chair- man of Maidstone Joint Parish Group, had recently died. Cllr Horne said Mr Thomas was

well-respected as a campaigner who did much to protect Kent from the effects of unconstrained development. He said: “He was a thoroughly decent person. We will all miss him enormously.”

Quieter lanes

CLLR Richard Smith is still trying to boost public backing for an ap- plication for a Quiet Lanes scheme, to encourage considerate shared use of local lanes. Residents are encouraged to
