Plan agreed for Newsprint site

A MASSIVE logistics and ware- housing plant on the site of the old Aylesford Newsprint plant has been given the go-ahead. Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council (TMBC) approved plans for the £180m redevelopment of the site last month. Panattoni, the applicant, hopes that over 5,000 jobs will be created, both directly and indirectly. Work will start soon on the first two units, but the final design of the remaining space will depend on tenants' needs. Panattoni development director Antony Watkins said: “Aylesford will be our flagship development in the UK and we are committed to being a good neighbour to the local community and environment, and strengthening the local economy. “Since announcing our propos-

als … we have received very strong levels of interest at this stage in the project from potential tenants to take space here in Kent.” A £7m public link road to con- nect Station Road and Bellingham Way is designed to keep HGVs out of Aylesford village and reduce congestion between junctions four and five of the M20.

TMBC leader Nicolas Heslop

said: “This is a massive vote of con- fidence in our area and we can now look forward to breaking

ground on this exciting develop- ment.

“In the coming months, we will

be working with Panattoni to en- sure this development delivers the maximum benefit to our borough and residents in terms of jobs, in- vestment and local transport net- works.”

The construction is estimated to last around three years, with 450 staff on site and a similar number off site.

Distribution businesses will em-

ploy about 3,000 people, with an- other 2,560 thought to be engaged in ancillary businesses.

Lucy’s COVID ward work

A TEENAGE clinical support worker has told of her time working at Maidstone Hospital on a COVID ward. Lucy Shaw (18), of Aylesford, was

just 16 years old when she started her training in September 2019. She lost her grandad and great

aunt to the virus early last year and says without her family and team it could have been so much harder. She said: “I think it’s fair to say

not many people my age have ex- perienced or seen the things I have seen.

“One of the hardest things was limiting visitors to protect our pa- tients. As a result, the nursing staff effectively became their family, often sitting with them and sup- porting them during what was the hardest time of their life. But I love my job and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
