Perhaps with more time on their hands due to Lockdown, individuals and families are playing their part in clearing litter while many villages are setting up organised litter-picking groups.

Local specialist waste management company, Optimum Reycling waded in to help a combined Haddenham and Wilburton initiative recently that saw 44 bags of rubbish cleared.

Not to be outdone, a determined team collected another eight bags of litter on routes between Sutton and Mepal with reports too of community clearance initiatives at Little Thetford, Little Downham and around the Ely Leisure Village.

WITCHFORD WOMBLES Meanwhile Witchford Wombles are growing in numbers with seven teams in the village as well as Keith Dolan, the village handyman, who keeps the centre of the village and greens clear of litter. The teams estimate litter volume has doubled during Lockdown, weighing in on the last village pick at 13kg worth of crisp packets, fast food

packaging, cigarette packets and drink containers.

Perhaps winning the prize for the most unusual find while litter picking, one volunteer discovered about 100 fake £50 notes in Witchford’s Millennium Wood.

FAKE NOTES

High visibility vests, litter picker grabbers and some common sense advise is available via East Cambs District Council and parish councils whether joining in as part of an organised group or individually. After joining the 300-strong Ely Litter Pickers Group on Facebook, The Cox family, from Little Downham,

were very keen to get started on the patch going in to Little Downham where litter from the local fast-food outlets is strewn over the kerbside and in the hedges of people's gardens. Says mum, Natasha: “We enjoyed following the trails of litter - finding the matching glove to a pair, the other cans and packaging to a six-pack, etc. It is certainly very satisfying and strangely addictive! "We have since spotted some more

areas in Little Downham that require our Litter Picking attention, so we will be combining this with our local walks on a regular basis.” It can take years for litter to degrade, causing harm to wildlife and habitats. Food people drop – whether it is half- eaten burgers, chips or apple cores - can attract pigeons and vermin such as rats. Research shows litter contributes to further crime and that people feel less safe in areas that are littered. Want to get involved?
