species. The group has assisted with survey and maintenance of wildlife on the area known as Fairchild’s Meadow. Adjoining the meadows is an important wildlife site Guppy’s Pond and the Society and its members have, with the Parish Council, built observation areas and erected nest boxes. In 1988, collaborating with the Wilburton Action Group, HCS was influential in successfully opposing the building of a huge settlement between Wilburton and the A10. In 1992, 200 trees were

A quarter of a century on, the wood has matured to become a beautiful, peaceful haven for wildlife and represents a huge community achievement. In 1992, the HCS produced its first publication, an illustrated guide to parish wildlife called Flora and Fauna of Haddenham. In 1995 a second publication, The Birds of Haddenham was produced, containing extensive information, description, illustrations and lists of birdlife in the parish. Over 160 species were recorded, 74 of which are relatively common. In normal times, there are about 10 meetings each year featuring guest speakers covering a wide range of topics on local wildlife such as bats, turtle doves, red kites, orchards and the ‘levels’ (our Fenland waterways system). The future of conservation and
the environment now receives more attention than it did 37 years ago when the HCS was founded. The future of course, is represented by children and here the society has been active too, with the production of laminated wildflower identification packs for children and a card game based on Happy Families developed for the Robert Arkenstall Primary School.
The HCS is teaming with unsung heroes; like-minded people acting together, working hard, collaborating with other organisations to support wildlife and the environment for future generations.
