Keith Gallois

Witchford Voices choir manager and Viva director Keith Gallois’ misspent time at Sixth Form helps him remain a champion card shuffler and is pretty good at hiding aces up his sleeve…

AGE: Born in 1964, so 56, I think. I can never work it out.

FAMILY: Elise, studying a PhD in Climate Science at Edinburgh University and James studying Criminology at Lincoln. I live with my partner, Mary, in Elveden, surrounded by trees and deer.

EDUCATION: An ‘A’ level in poker was probably the reason for the D’s and E’s in English Literature and Geography, and hence the reason why I ended up doing an HND at Luton rather than the geography degree I fancied.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Manager of Witchford Voices Community Choir and I am also a theatre director with Viva in Soham. Although we haven’t been able to perform live, we have breached the gap with a series of online theatrical experiences which has introduced new skills.

BEST PIECE OF LIFE ADVICE: Don’t lecture the choir about paying attention to the Musical Director and then fall asleep yourself at the back of the room.

IDEAL DINNER GUESTS: I’m a big Norwich City fan, so clearly dinner with the manager Daniel Farke and of course Delia.

WHAT DO YOU DRIVE AND WHAT MOST LIKELY TO BE LISTENING TO IN THE CAR? I’ve got a Kia Sportage, which isn’t half bad at all. I’m not really a car person though.

30

It’s a pleasing shade of red and has a decent stereo. If in the car with Mary we are likely to be chatting, but if on my own, it would probably be an audio book.

FAVOURITE READ? I have recently completed Erebus by Michael Palin, about the life and eventual loss of the ship Erebus and her crew. My favourite climbing book is Jon Kraukeur's ‘Into Thin Air’ about the 1997 Everest disaster. Neither of them is a comedy.

MUSICAL INFLUENCES: If you heard how badly I sing, you would agree that no one has influenced me. But in terms of artists, they would be ELO and Imagine Dragons. I also went to a great Amy Winehouse concert in Boston, Mass.

LOCKDOWN EXPERIENCE: Life has slowed down and that’s been good for me. Walking miles in the forest every day and seeing herds of deer has been great for the soul. But I’ve kept busy as well with the online theatre projects, running local quizzes and even being the official Norwich City Santa (at least I wasn’t in the Canary costume).

THREE WISHES FOR OUR VILLAGE COMMUNITIES: That we all remain safe and get through the current crisis. That we soon get all our community activities running again. Our various organisations are a lifeline for so many, particularly in terms of mental health. That the spirit of each community stays strong as our villages grow.
