W

e urge you to take some quality rest time to savour the April issue of your award-winning community magazine made possible through the support of local business.

You will find the usual regulars on local history, wellbeing, finances, recipes and puzzles. Look out too for reports on village conservation, protecting our access to the countryside and rural housing. We also feature the efforts of two families who have turned negatives into positives featuring the moving cases of two local children who have overcome extreme odds.

This issue reaches you as we look forward to Easter and fight the temptation to jump the lockdown gun – let us all keep being careful out there.

There will be lots to learn as we look back on the repercussions of the Covid-19 crisis. One of the successes has been the speedy roll out of the vaccination programme. As my turn came to receive my first grateful injection, the abundance of positive, smiling volunteers, clearly making a huge difference.

There were strong similarities to the 2012 London Olympics where Games

Makers, myself included, added a special ingredient to the success of the event. Thank you to all those who have given their time so generously.

People power is also paying huge dividends as a rural army of volunteers come forward to help clear litter from our footpaths and roadside verges.

I am not sure if any of the volunteers are among the vocal residents of Mepal who are complaining about the 15.8 percent rise per year per household. There are currently two vacancies on the council by the way.

Perhaps those residents who make a difference to our communities,

through volunteering as parish councillors, maintaining footpaths, litter picking, running support groups, working for the NHS – could get a Citizen’s Reward discount on their council tax? Just thinking out loud.

d Take Care!
