role and am really looking forward to meeting and working with the many different stakeholders involved with the River Dart. The team at Dart Harbour have been busy during the winter, servicing all of the Dart Harbour moorings, including using divers to do the maintenance of the mainstream ship buoys. They have also carried out routine maintenance on our fleet of boats and repairs on pontoons, such as replacing fendering and anodes. In many ways, spring is a time of new beginnings and I am sure that, with the Government’s roadmap out of the pandemic, 2021 promises to be a far more enjoyable year. So far this year, we have

S
o, here is my first update for the By the Dart magazine as the new CEO/Harbour Master
at Dart Harbour. I took over the reins from the Interim Harbour Master, Captain Richard Eggleton on 1st March and I relish my new
Maintenance of the mainstream ship buoys by a team of divers
carried out a public consultation exercise on some design ideas to improve the access to the water, to provide modern and safe berthing for vessels in this area. The consultation closed at the end of February and a review of the responses is underway. I will provide more information on the chosen design and the programme for this new development in a future issue of By the Dart, as well as through our normal communication channels. We published our Annual Report
for 2020 and our new Harbour Guide for 2021; you can see digital copies of these on our website
www.dartharbour.org. We are also expecting a
replacement pontoon for the DC pontoon in March. So many of you are keen to get back out on the water and chomping at the bit following the lockdown, but I would like to encourage you all to think about safety first. As the Government’s road map out of COVID progresses, more freedoms will become available to you and the urge will be to get out on the river as soon as possible. However, please make essential safety checks on your vessels before setting out to sea to ensure that your vessel is seaworthy. I would also like to stress
that individuals need to follow the Government guidelines on travelling and each should take responsibility for their own actions during the gradual reductions in restrictions. Dart Harbour will review its own COVID messages and these can be found on the news page of the website. I would like to thank Captain
Richard Eggleton for the excellent interim work and his efficient handover to me during February, I know that the team at Dart Harbour have enjoyed working with him. I very much look forward to meeting with some of you on the river over the months to come.
