The Dartmouth Trust

Trustee Vacancy D

artmouth Trust is the custodian of substantial wealth, originally acquired by the then Roman Catholic St Saviour’s Church in the mid 1500s or earlier.

During the reformation The Town Corporation gained control of this wealth and over time

merged it with their other activities. This use was challenged by the Reverend Foster in the late 1800s resulting in the Charities Commission setting up custodianship of the monies to a newly formed Trust in 1889. The Trust ensured the protection of the benefits for the worthy causes.

In 1909 the Charity Commission split off the obligation to the disadvantaged into a separate

charity, leaving the Trust with the sole purpose of managing the endowment and distributing its surplus income to the three beneficiaries. A full history of the Trust can be found on the website www.dartmouthtrust.org.uk .

Over £4million has been distributed to the 3 beneficiary charities over the past decade, directly benefitting the town and its residents. These 3 charities (Dartmouth United Charities, The Eccestiastical Share of the Dartmouth Trust, and the Public Purposes Share), with their separate trustee boards, provide public benefit to the town and local people. Benefits include almshouse accommodation provision, repairs to churches and other historic buildings and grant giving to local good causes.

The Dartmouth Trust is currently recruiting a trustee to help manage its investments for the long-term benefit of the above charities. Investments comprise a mix of directly held property and charity investment funds. Trustees are responsible for leading the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring that it works effectively and in accordance with its legal constitution.

Skills that the current trustees would welcome include experience of managing investments and

commercial property or related legal matters. Local knowledge is important as is a commitment to the role.

The role of a trustee is voluntary. Meetings of the board are held quarterly and trustees are involved with other matters throughout the year by email or committee.

If you have relevant skills and the time and energy to devote to the charity, please email info@dartmouthtrust.org.uk or phone 01803 835006 for an informal discussion with the Chair/Vice- chair of trustees.
