More support is needed for young workers
Y
oung people have developed “highly sought after” skills during the pandemic, according to Future Faces president Jaccy Datta.
However, Jaccy is urging businesses to continue to focus on mental
health and flexible working to support young professionals, and future business leaders, once the pandemic is over. According to Take The Temperature: Dig the Data West Midlands, a
report published by Beatfreeks alongside BMet and Youth Focus West Midlands, young people have been hardest hit by the effects of the pandemic. Jaccy says that despite this being particularly concerning in the
West Midlands, as under-25s account for more than 40 per cent of Birmingham’s population, young professionals have learnt and adapted quickly. She said: “It's important to recognise, however, that this challenging period has assisted young people to develop a number of skills which are highly sought after by businesses across the region, such as resilience, empathy, teamwork, versatility and more. “With learning and jobs moving online, young people have had
to learn to create healthy work-life balances, adapt to new technologies and ways of working, become self-disciplined and self-motivated, and caused businesses to realise that more focus and support is required on mental health and flexible working. It's vital that businesses continue to provide young professionals with such support once this pandemic is over, and that these learnings are taken forward to support our future leaders.” Jaccy added: “Government, policy makers and businesses all
need to make a real effort to understand how the current situation has affected not just young professionals, but young people in general, and identify ways they can be supported at this difficult time; this can be helped by ensuring young people's voices are heard and truly taken into consideration wherever possible. “Now is the time to ensure that young people are
encouraged to join boards, committees, networks and workshops which are ongoing in the region and beyond, to help Birmingham to continue to be recognised for the fantastic work it does in supporting young people.” In order to support young people, Jaccy has
made a number of recommendations for businesses. “It is also important to realise that whilst life
may feel like it is 'on hold' both personally and professionally right now, it is still vitally important for businesses and networks to continue to support young people in their development, whether that be via providing more apprenticeships, work experience, skill development opportunities or mentoring connections, to assist them in becoming not just the future leaders of our region, but the best versions of themselves they can be,” she said.
