Tony gets set to pick up the baton T
ony Elvin, general manager at Touchwood, is to become president of Solihull Chamber of Commerce.
He will take over the role from Robert Elliot,
who has served a two-year tenure as president, at the Chamber’s annual meeting on 18 March. Originally from Essex, Tony has spent nearly
30 years in a variety of hospitality and retail roles across the country. After leaving school at 16 to train as a
quantity surveyor Tony left to a pursue his passion in hospitality, holding his first bar manager role at just 21. But, the enthusiastic emerging hospitality
leader had to take an 18-month break after being diagnosed with leukaemia. That experience, Tony says, left him more determined than ever to progress in the industry. He explained: “Since then I have woken up
every morning grateful to be alive and with a smile on my face. I came back to work 18 months later more determined than ever to progress. “I worked my way from bar manager in a
family entertainment and bowling centre to general manager, moving around the country for First Leisure.
‘I pledge to do everything possible to protect Solihull businesses and #KeepBusinessMoving’
“I then jumped across to a sister division,
Esporta Health and Fitness, spending several years managing health clubs for Esporta, LA Fitness and Greens before moving to Village Hotels, a sister brand of Greens. I managed four different hotels for Village, the latter two were new openings, the most recent in Solihull, bringing me to the region in 2009.” In 2012, Tony joined Hotel du Vin as
general manager in Birmingham where, alongside running the hotel, he managed the group’s wine events programme. After a six-year spell at the hotel,
Tony moved to Touchwood shopping centre as its general manager. Nearing three years in the role,
Tony commented: “It has been an amazing experience, I have had an unwavering support that has allowed us to start evolving what we offer here, using my background, experience and contacts within hospitality to create a more balanced retail and leisure offer, focusing on the delivery of something more experiential.”
58 CHAMBERLINK February 2021 As well as his role at Touchwood, Tony runs
The Wine Events Company, is a champion for Cure Leukaemia, trustee for Birmingham Civic Society and deputy chair for Solihull Business Improvement District. Now on the cusp of his presidential
tenure, Tony is keen to emulate the same values as his predecessor. He said: “I am very
excited at the opportunity to pick up the baton from Robert Elliot in March as the next president of Solihull Chamber. Rob held this position with care, sincerity, good humour and
commitment. All values I hope to emulate. “Alongside our work on inclusion,
sustainability and work inspiration for young people I pledge to do everything possible to protect Solihull businesses and #KeepBusinessMoving. We will campaign for the right levels of financial support from government, provide an unrivalled network of thought leadership and work together to find a way out of these choppy waters. The Chamber is in a perfect position to support local business as a one stop shop for all the information they need and I’ll be doing everything I can to ensure members have access to this information.”
