News | Remembrance Sunday

downsmail.co.uk We remember in silence THE war memorials across Maidstone borough were largely silent this Remembrance Sunday,

as residents observed calls to stay away. The Mayor, Cllr Marion Ring, led the council's respectful service which was switched from the Broadway to Brenchley Gardens, behind locked gates. Ordinarily, there would be thousands gath- ered around the war memorial. This

time, local councillor

Jonathan Purle and a few others left wreaths at the Broadway. Cllr Ring said: “It is sad that we

are unable to hold the Remem- brance Service as we would usu- ally have done this year, but it is so important that we continue to re- member the sacrifice of those who have died in the service of their country.”

In Headcorn, the names of the fallen were displayed on signs along the church path while nearby a string of knitted poppies were mounted on the gates of the Baptist Church. A floral tribute bearing the word “Remember” was visible by the roadside in Ulcombe.

Cllr Purle, concerned donations will be hit this year, called on local people to go to www.rbi.org/pop- pyappeal and click on “Donate”.
