Work nally starts on houses at ‘The Bogs’

THREE years after work started to clear fields known to everyone in Bearsted as The Bogs, developers have finally begun to build there. Land where two streams con-

verge will be the site for 50 homes. But locals like Rosemary Har-

low, pictured, have long expressed fears the area is a flood plain and not suitable for house-building. Mrs Harlow (81), who has lived in the village since 1964, said: “They started work clearing this three years ago and it’s still not properly started. “A lot of people have doubted the sense of building houses on what is effectively a flood plain. It’s not known as The Bogs locally for no reason, but no one listens to the locals, do they? “This was the last piece of green space in the village that was not Woodland Trust land or Elizabeth Harvie Field, and now it is an ab- solute eyesore.” Developer Country House De-

velopments are building 43 homes on the main site and another seven on a plot near Cross Keys. There will a bridge near the en- trance and another to cross the stream that runs through land. An- other spring runs into it onsite, but it is often dry. Access will be from Cross Keys and into Roundwell. Pile foundations are being in- stalled and work on the houses

may start this side of Christmas. Contractor R M Brooke is carry- ing out the work. Spokesman Bob Wraight said: “We are currently putting in the pile foundations and that’s the first thing to go in, so the house-building has commenced.” One construction worker said:

“This place might be a nightmare to look at at the moment, but it will be transformed by next spring.”
