FUW NEWS Farmer Directors re-elected to FUW board

THREE farmer Directors have been re‐elected on to the FUWboard, at a virtual meeting of the Council of the Union.

The Board of Directors is made up of FUW

President Glyn Roberts, FUWDeputy President Ian Rickman, Finance Director Simon Longworth, farmer Directors Darren Williams, Iwan Jones and Richard Vaughan, as well as Non‐Executive Directors Nerys Evans and Sara Jones, which bring to the table diverse expertise in terms of business and governance.

“Our farmer Directors bring the much

needed grassroots element to the table with their wealth of expertise from farming to business, and I thank all three of them for the work they have already done over the years and their continued commitment to the future of this Union.

“I look forward to creating fresh strategies

for the FUWand I am excited to work with such a great team. Our strategies will continue to be driven by effectiveness, better governance, transparency and efficiency,” said FUWPresident Glyn Roberts.

Darren

Williams is a tenant farmer on a 2 7 0 acre farm outside Brecon. Together with his wife Rachel and two young sons, they run 5 0 0 ewes, 1 0 0 ewe lambs and 1 0 0 cattle. After gaining a BSc in agriculture at Aberystwyth, he began farming on a county council holding in Glasbury and was then fortunate enough to move to a larger tenanted farm 9 years ago. The farm is a mixed farm, growing their own corn for finishing cattle, and fattening their lambs from forage crops and grass and red clover leys. He also represents the FUWon the Agricultural Advisory Panel dealing with AgriculturalWages.

Iwan Jones farms with his wifeMenna and parents at Groes Bach, Denbigh, a dairy farm of some 1 4 0 cows, producing organic milk for Arla. Since graduating from Aberystwyth with a degree in Agriculture with Business along with farming at home with his parents, he has previously been a Director of a dairy co‐operative, worked on agricultural statistics for the university and held a number of voluntary positions.

Richard

Vaughan runs PallMall Farm, north of Tywyn. The farm is one of two holdings, totalling 5 5 0 acres, and is farmed by Richard and his wife Dwynwen. Most of the land is at Pant y Panel and Prysglwyd at Rhydymain near Dolgellau which has an abundance of natural resources and Richard has invested in a 1 0 0 kw Hydro Scheme to make use of that as well as providing valuable extra income for an upland farm. A flock of 7 5 0 WelshMountain Sheep is kept,

together with 1 5 0 ewe lambs as replacements. Approximately 3 0 store cattle are kept and fattened over the summer as well as around 1 0 0 cattle on contract on a large finishing unit in Northamptonshire.

WE want to update you on our position regarding COVID‐ 1 9 . The health and safety of our employees, members and customers is our first priority and we are continuing to follow and monitor official guidance from theWelsh Government carefully. Following the latest advice, our offices are currently closed as it remains possible for our staff to work from home. People are still contracting and dying from this

disease. We may not feel the dire impact of the disease in rural areas compared with more urban areas, but that doesn’t mean we should become complacent. Our offices are usually small spaces with shared facilities and therefore not suitable to open

to the public. However, we are still very much open for business with our team working remotely and

using digital technology to continue to provide a high‐quality service to our customers and members. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we do our best to keep people safe.
