headteacher
Mathew Currie started at South Borough this week. In a letter to parents, Mrs Oak- ley wrote: “This will be my final letter to you as a member of the South Borough team. “Over the last eight years, I have
been on the most incredible jour- ney with all of you. It has been a privilege to teach, work with, sup- port and learn from the amazing school community. “With the help of many passion- ate and committed people within the school community and beyond,
the school has and will continue to go from strength to strength.” Mrs Oakley, who originally
joined as a class teacher, success- fully led South Borough to Kent’s top school as published in the Kent Schools Guide in 2019-20. She added: “The highlight of my time at South Borough has to be meeting all of you, the teamwork, laughing, sharing, supporting, en- couraging, and understanding through both difficult and not so difficult situations.
“To the children of South Bor-
ough – you will all hold a special place in my heart, and I will con- tinue to smile and glow with pride as I hear about all your successes and achievements. Always re- member to follow South Bor- ough’s core values, they will guide you well in your journey in life. “Mr Currie will be a huge asset to the school and be most success- ful at taking the reins alongside Mrs Olivier and Mr Clarke.”
Funds for wine centre
SCIENTISTS at an agricultural research institute at East Malling have se- cured funding to create a Wine Innovation Centre. The team of viticulturists, together with the East Malling Trust, have se-
cured a £600,000 loan to improve Kent’s burgeoning wine industry. The South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) donated the cash under its Growing Place Fund. Geoff Taylor, Chairman of the East Malling Viticulture Consortium, said:
“This is excellent news and NIAB EMR scientists can now build upon their high-level research to offer grape-to-glass support to UK winemakers. “The quality of the area’s sparkling wine has been recognised around
the world, winning many leading international awards. While sparking white wine accounts for nearly 70 per cent of all UK wine, there is the real opportunity to achieve the same reputation for our still white wines and bring quality red wines to the market.” The Wine Innovation Centre was opened last year by Tom Tugendhat, MP for Tonbridge & Malling.
