Post office faces closure if subsidy withdrawn

YALDING Post Office may be forced to close in six months be- cause of increasing financial pres- sures.

It comes as the government pre- pares to end its subsidy of the Post Office network in March next year. Sub postmaster Tim Chapman

says “closure will be the only op- tion” if the system, known as the Core Tier Payment, were to col- lapse, as the branch would be left paying for itself to stay open. Mr Chapman, pictured, said: “Brexit negotiations with the EU have raised big problems. “If the Brexit agreement includes tying in with the EU industry sub- sidy rules, then our subsidy will cease on March 31st next year. “Our little branch and some 500 others in the country are affected by this problem. If the Government allows the current subsidy to cease, our wages will plummet to such a degree we may as well be paying to keep ourselves open.

“We are too small to rely on the

retail side of the business to pay for the Post Office side. Closure will be the only option.

“I’m not sure how anyone can

help us in such a situation. We only have six months left to sort it out.”

The National Federation of Sub Postmasters (NFSP) CEO, Calum Greenhow, said: “Post offices are vital assets to communities and local economies across the UK. Government should take steps to ensure these assets are protected.”
