CASTING CONTEST

FINALISTS Uni-Cast Produces Complex Electronics Housing

The customer, familiar with investment casting capabilities, turned to Uni-Cast, LLC. for this military electronics housing. Designing the component as an investment casting, rather than as an assembly, realized a reduced weight and elimination of assembly time and cost.

Outside of design complexity this part requires controlled solidification with elevated mechanical property requirements. Uni- Cast’s SPARK process was utilized to achieve these requirements. The SPARK process has proven to be a reliable method of consistently achieving or exceeding property requirements consistently. The component was initially manufactured from SLA patterns to validate process capabilities. Prototypes were cut- up to validate mechanical requirements and laser scanned for dimensional accuracy.

PART: Electronics Housing Size: 20 x 16 x 15 in. Alloy: E357

One-of-a-Kind Mirror Bracket

Impressed with the work performed on a custom steering wheel for a 1965 Volkswagen, VW turned to Aristo-Cast to produce custom mirror holders for the same vehicle. Cast in A357 Aluminum, the investment casting replaced die casting as the preferred method of manufacture for this part. Once again demonstrating how additive manufacturing is a complementary technology to investment casting, especially on low volume orders.

PART: Mirror Bracket Size: 12.00 x 4.00 x 1.25 In. Alloy: A357 Aluminum T6 Condition Notes: Casting Conversion from die casting
