AGENDA FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2020

1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Paper No. 8: New Generation Colloidal Silica Binders - How they are Made John Lea, Geo40 A new method of economic production of colloidal silica has been developed and scaled up to production levels. Geo40 represents a new sustainable and environmentally friendly production method.

The silica

sols are produced from natural silica laden separated geothermal water, without the need for any chemical inputs. The geothermal water is brought to the surface from deep under the ground by geothermal power station operators. The Geo40 process harvests the minerals from the water before it is pumped back into the same reservoir where it gets reheated by nature, ready to generate further renewable power. The resulting silica sols show beneficial properties as binders for all the typical market applications. The silica sol production process is green and sustainable, with a low carbon footprint. These new generation, sustainable sols have been undergoing extensive market testing and are being sold into investment casting applications.

3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Paper No. 9: Life Cycle of our Ceramic Shells John Slawvey, Vestshell, Inc. In 2014, Vestshell decided to adopt a Sustainable Development program. Looking at this program, we understood it would help Vestshell to be more environmentally friendly and be a better and greener investment casting foundry. Vestshell is certified ECO- responsible level.

The second life of our waste products has helped

Vestshell reduce our materials that we send to the landfill. It has also helped in reducing our operating costs for the benefit of our customers. It also has a large impact on the environment by reducing CO2 emissions, reducing vehicles on the road and saving trees. With some research and help from recycling companies, most foundries can do the same as Vestshell.
