Wear A Mask And Keep Smiling

Necessity is the mother of invention. In Julia Belcher’s case, it was two parts innovation and intuition with one part the need to get busy and just do something. Julia, who is a seamstress, began mak-

ing face masks when there was a shortage reported early in the pandemic crisis. She gave them to her friends and colleagues at work. She also donated masks to local Tampa Bay area hospitals. Since all live events for fundraising

were cancelled due to COVID-19, rescue groups have been struggling to raise money to cover medical expenses. As a Dachshund lover, Julia created and donat- ed masks to Dachshund Adoption Rescue and Education (D.A.R.E.) for their much-needed virtual fundraising efforts. When she began selling her creations,

Julia posted photos of the masks on her personal Facebook page. She’s been busy ever since, with certain designs quickly selling out. A lot of her business is repeat business as customers are impressed not only with the designs, but with the qual- ity and care that goes into each piece.

Handmade with two layers of woven cotton, the masks can

be worn with either elastic or ties. Each mask also incorporates a metal nose piece, medical-grade filter, and is designed to follow the current CDC guidelines for COVID-19. Julia recommends hand washing after each use, and throwing them in the dryer to help sanitize the masks. “If we have to wear masks, they

shouldn’t be boring,” said Julia, who also sews outfits for her three Dachshunds, Katie, Brody and Riley. “I mean, my own outfits match my masks now,” she added. No matter where you stand on the

mask-wearing spectrum, you have to admit, wearing these quirky-cool designs will just make you and everyone else smile. And that’s just what the world needs now – a smile, for no reason at all. Just smile.
