A Warmly Illustrated Examination (continued) Mario Porter, a friend James met

on the streets, comes by every day or two to help him out. “I notice that Diezel seems a little less anxious, now that they have a home,” Mario said. “It seemed like Diezel’s head used to be on a swivel, checking for problems.” James is also very content in his

apartment and thankful for the com- munity efforts to help him. “Everyone knows how grateful I

am,” James explained. Community Pet Project was

organized in 2017 as an all volunteer 501c3 charitable organization serving Hillsborough County, Florida. Volunteers attend quarterly community outreach events sponsored by the Hillsborough County Sheriff ’s Office and the Tampa Police Department. CPP provides homeless and at-risk families with pet food and pet supplies such as flea prevention, wormer, grooming supplies, treats, and toys. They also provide information regard- ing low cost veterinary care and spay and neuter surgeries. Many area rescue volunteers often

encounter homeless and at-risk people who are desperately trying to care for their pets. For some, their pets are the only reason they are able to survive a life of hopelessness and despair. Sadly, many end up surrendering their pets to local shelters because when they are no longer able to provide for them. The need is great, especially now more than ever. “The worst thing about living on

the streets was the lack of plumbing,” James said. “I’ll never take that for granted again. Or the kindness of strangers.”
