Dogs graduating from this program fulfill many roles,

from family companions to service and therapy dogs. Pure and mixed breeds from Miami-Dade Animal Services and local animal groups are eligible. Magic City K9’s program is usual- ly the dog’s final chance at redemption – and life. Dee scouts the shelter for dog-social dogs with a high affinity towards humans (eager to please, make friends). Each dog is hand- selected, temperament tested, and further evaluated/moni- tored by a certified dog behavior consultant. Magic City K9s makes sure the dogs are up-to-date with vaccines, spayed or neutered, and available for adoption. The application process includes providing references and the adoption fee enables this worthwhile program to continue. As we left the cell block concluding our visit, I noticed a

visible line of rocks in the yard, reminding me of Andy dig- ging his way out of Shawshank. The men I met that day may have made bad decisions (theft, robbery, nonviolent crimes) and are paying their dues to society. The finish line and free- dom are in sight with their releases being three years or less. These dogs were dealt a bad hand through no fault of their own; genetically, or simply by being in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Together, with Magic City K9, the men and the second-chance dogs are helping to change each other for the better.

Note from Tina about this story: It’s about as hard to get into prison, as it is to bust out. Six weeks in advance of my planned visit, I had to submit my driver's license, social security number, car make, model, color, and tag with my request to do the story. I had to submit who, what, why I wanted entry, and all credentials from The New Barker dog magazine. I also had to agree to allow proofing/fact checking of my finished feature and adhere to specific photo guidelines. When I still hadn’t received permission a couple days

after applying, I called Tallahassee to follow up. The gen- tleman on the phone was so nice, and said I was all set. That week, I had a minor car accident, and had to get a rental. Dee Hoult said they spotted me, miles out from the prison, arriving in a screamin' lime green jeep. My cell phone and handbag remained in the jeep. Once inside, I was patted down, went through the scanner and had to have my camera bag and notebook reviewed. Before leaving, a guard had to review all images on my camera.
