Stream and Scream The Shudder original horror film Spiral features,
gasp, two gay main characters portrayed by Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman (AHS: Apocalypse) and Ari Cohen (It Chapter Two). The story of two gay dads of a teenage daughter encompasses the terrifying landscape of relocating to a small town in the year 1995. The movie has been likened to the LGBT version of Get Out, so I guess you could think of it as Get Out, Girl! The Haunting of Bly Manor is the follow-up
to last year’s amazing effort The Haunting of Hill House and is loosely based on Henry James’ The Turning of the Screw, which has been brought to life on the big screen with 1961’s The Innocents and this year’s The Turning. The less said about the latter, the better, except to say that I would give it a grade of A, for A-wful! Anyhoo, the supernatural drama – yes, that’s a thing – focuses on a young au pair left in charge of two children and begins seeing ghostly apparitions. (October 9) Another Netflix show, Ryan Murphy’s Ratchet, has been referred to as American Horror Story: Cuckoo’s Nest. And that’s a great thing, because
The Devil To Pay
Season 10 of the fall favorite has been pushed back to next year. Sarah Paulsen headlines as the titular character, first played by Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and is the origin of the villainous nurse. Oh, and Sharon Stone is in it with a pet monkey that sports the same outfits as she does. So, there’s that. Hulu’s episodic horror anthology series Monsterland features – wait for it – tales of monsters! Or as SNL character Stefon (Bill Hader) might be apt to describe it: “This show has it all, werewolves, mermaids, fallen angels, a lesbian wearing an eyepatch.” The Sapphic sister in question is Orange is the New Black alumnus Taylor Schilling as one of the mortals dealing with things that go bump in the night. (October 2) Joining the ranks of horror TV hosts like Elvira
and Svengoolie is Stan the Mechanic coming to Here TV this month, though there is no firm date. The “hairy homosexual host” has previously been lending his insights to old school horror flicks on
bearworldmag.com.
There’s also a trio of Video on Demand movies to check out. First up is Antebellum starring Janelle Monáe as successful author Veronica Henley, who finds herself trapped on a 19th
century slave
plantation from which she must escape from, as the past and present collide. Who doesn’t love a good ol’ fashioned movie
that centers around witches? Such is the case with The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw, in which – no pun intended – a mother and daughter (Catherine Walker and Jessica Reynolds) are the prime suspects for bringing a plague that is killing both crops and livestock in their Protestant village. The Devil To Pay has a rather, um, unique
premise in presenting the story of Lemon (Danielle Deadwyler), whose husband has disappeared. That’s not so unusual for a scary movie. However, in his absence Lemon must repay his debt to the oldest mountain-dwelling family in the region. Nothing out of the ordinary there. However, the family is ruled by a “murderous biscuit-making matriarch.” Well that certainly is different. (October 6)
