Todd's Corner Most importantly I hope this finds each of you mentally and physically healthy!

The big question we are all talking about is what will the 87th Legislature look like under COVID-19 concerns. The truthful answer is no one knows at this point! The members of the House were polled, and the response ranged from 'lets get back to work now' to 'is there a way to have session remotely?' Before we can start discussing what will happen in January we have to get through a Special Election for Senate District 30. Senator Pat Fal- lon who is now running for the US Congress held SD30. There are six candi- dates fighting for the seat and the election will be held on September 29th.

This is not the only hot race on the ballot this election cycle, there are numerous contested races in both the Texas House and Senate. Many believe that this could be the year the Democrats take control of the House once again. Regardless of who

wins in November, the members of the 87th Legislature have an unprecedented task before them starting in January. It is estimated that Texas could have as much as a 25-billion-dollar short fall due to the impacts of COVID-19 on the Texas economy. This will mean massive cuts to state agency budgets as well as continued under-funding for education and other important components of state government. The budget will not be the only challenge faced next session, there will also be a number of bills filed to address police funding, voting procedures and law enforcement procedures. These issues will be discussed and debated with passion and convection on both sides.

This does not mean that other issues that are important to Texas, like housing, will not be discussed. So please make sure that you inform TALHFA of any issues you may be dealing with in your area. I want to remind you that this is also the perfect time to invite members of the legislature to your properties or meet them in their office to introduce yourself and make sure they understand the positive impact that affordable housing is having on their district.

Todd’s Tip: At a time when disagreement seems to be the order of the day, remember, “You can be anything in life, so please choose to be nice”!

A better tomorrow starts today.

We are proud to sponsor Texas Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies , and we applaud its leadership in advocating for affordable housing in the state of Texas.
