Knowledge for Healthcare: Developing an appropriately skilled library and knowledge services workforce


“Health librarianship is positively buzzing” concluded David Stewart and Sue Lacey Bryant in Part One of their review of progress in leading, planning and developing the health library and knowledge services workforce.1


In Part Two, they focus on developing an appropriately skilled knowledge services workforce.


Health Librarianship is full of ener- gy and life. NHS Health Education England (HEE) offers an engaging programme of development oppor- tunities that few sectors can match. Meanwhile roles in this field are intrinsically worthwhile, offering the potential to enjoy immense job satisfaction.


We established a Workforce Planning and Development workstream in 2015, with the goal of ensuring that library and knowledge services staff have the right skills to deliver the right knowledge and evidence at the right time and place.2


Ensuring effective


leadership, planning and development of our specialised library and knowledge services workforce is central to delivery of Knowledge for Healthcare, Health Education England’s strategy for library and knowledge services.3 For the NHS, both evidence from research and knowledge sharing are essential to inform decisions by staff, learners, organisa- tions and patients. Proactive library services are business-critical.


Developing the right skills


From the outset we have used driver diagrams as a strategic planning tool for Knowledge for Healthcare, spelling out the drivers for change as well as interventions which we believed would make a difference.3


(See figure 1). In part one of our review 2015-20,1 we reported


on progress on interventions to establish national and regional leadership, and on
