United Utilities roadmap.

effectiveness, the Health Librarians and Knowledge Specialists produced a set of impact case study vignettes #AMillion- Decisions which they’ve made available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/UNB-ScmkQIo I (re) learned during my recent work helping Eastbourne, meet the twin challenge of mobilising to meet the crisis and preparing for recovery, that networks matter. The concept of Paying it Forward and Knowledge Matchmaking are so important in business environment. As a result of past efforts I was able to call on a wide network that contributed ideas and time without expectation of reward or rec- ognition. We live in a connected world and have the ability to make the most of networks, but it requires us to reach out in the first place! Monica from Lloyds reminded us that the Financial Services industry is constantly changing, and KM professionals are used to dealing with it. The importance of frameworks and structure in a regulatory environment cannot be underestimated nor the power of a community approach to enacting process improvement. United Utilities came across as a caring company with a definite roadmap (see illustration).

It was interesting to hear Loraine talk about the benefits of working from home and the need to collaborate more as a business where no one is furloughed. It has meant the fastest roll of any IT programme ever in an organisation full of engineers who thrive on structure. Paul Hector from UNESCO gave a com- pelling endorsement of the value of KM in a global organisation.

This slide speaks volumes about being a trusted voice!

Some emerging learnings

The Covid-19 has demonstrated the value of investing in KM.

KM, digital infrastructure, training of staff etc. has enabled the Organisation to operate, effectively collaborate and innovate during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new working environment, contributed to decentralisation, a flatter more collaborative structure and a strong action bias. Import to explore how to preserve such aspects post-Covid-19.

Research on the governance of information platforms given the potential harm of disinformation and the implication for human rights such as freedom expression, the freedom to share and hold opinion and privacy is needed to inform policy.

Important to capture and disseminate the global experience and learning from Covid-19 through case studies, after action reviews, post mortems etc. for the future.

The concluding address by David Smith noted the extent to which Her Majesty’s Government are embracing collaborative tools at the expense of email. At a moment’s notice people are being moved so it’s vital to know what they know and where to find it!

Delights: l That a UN Agency (UNESCO) is spear- heading the fight against disinformation around Covid-19 and leading the drive for global digital literacy.

l The idea of “Wobble Rooms’ and Staff Counselling being ingrained in NHS processes.

l The use of the phrase “Horse Blanket”

to describe UU Engineering’s KM Strategy and “Individually we are a drop, together we are an ocean” to describe the impor- tance of interdependency.

Memorable quotes (Tweets): Interesting discussion at #CILIPKM – if the ‘new normal’ is more of a hybrid between staff working physically in the office and those working remotely, then we need to develop new cultures accordingly. Meetings where some people are ‘in the room’ & some are dialing in don’t work – Nick Poole

Loraine (United Utilities) needed to focus on the knowledge flow. Talk about their communities, get people to share their knowledge and give it the value/recogni- tion it deserved. Celebrating success. Using Knowledge Cafes, social networks webinars etc #CILIPKM “Knowledge Management by stealth” – CILIP Events

I have to say #CilipKm in a time of crisis was a superb event, I’ve made pages of notes, (already typed up) my brain is buzz- ing, my concern going into the event was lack of networking opps but the breakout rooms worked so well. Added bonus I’m home before 4 – Angela Betts

Lessons from running a virtual event: l Storytelling is absolutely key to good

virtual communication. l Each presentation should be a maximum of 20-25 minutes.

l Each session should be summarised and broken into an hour maximum.

Takeaways Agile: Echoing a strong theme that came out in the KM Cookbook, KM’ers need to be agile. All of the speakers demonstrated
