Be part of a record of life under Covid-19
CILIP Cymru Wales has created a new resource that allows librarians and infor mation professionals from across Wales to share stories about life and work during the Covid19 pandemic.
The platform allows anyone working in libraries or information professions to contribute text, images, video or audio, which will be used as a record of life under lockdown and beyond. Visit
www.fortherecord.wales/ to watch a short ‘how to’ video and to take part, or contact

Pro-democracy books removed
CHINA’S new national security laws have led to public libraries in Hong Kong removing prodemocracy literature from their shelves. Questions were asked after an Agence FrancePresse reporter was unable to find the titles at a public library. Missing books include titles from Joshua Wong, a prominent activist and Tanya Chan, a prodemocracy lawmaker. The Guardian reported that the city’s cultural services department, which runs libraries, said books had been removed while it determined whether they violate the national security law and had said: “In the process of the review the books will not be available for borrowing and reference.”
Suspended sentence
for accountant AN accountant for Devonbased mutual Libraries Unlimited has received a suspended jail sentence for defrauding the charity of £43,500, and £3,571 from another charity, Westcountry Rivers Trust (WRT). Kim Bruce’s dishonesty was uncovered at WRT but she then moved to Libraries Unlimited and started stealing 10 days later, according to court reports. Bruce, 53, of Deer Park, Ivybridge, was jailed for a year and nine months, suspended for two years, by Judge David Evans at Exeter Crown Court who ordered her to do 210 hours of unpaid community work and 20 days of rehabilitation activities.

Knowledge and skills base review centred on workforce development
CILIP’s Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) is being reviewed. The PKSB is available to all CILIP members and is the skills framework that sits at the centre of workforce development for the sector. Individuals use it to focus their CPD and plan career progression. Employers use it to identify skills gaps within organisations and target their CPD effectively. CILIP uses it to underpin accreditation of qualifications, as a basis for Professional Registration and to shape the learning offer. Jo Cornish, Head of Sector Develop ment, said: “The PKSB reflects the diversity of skills and experience within the information profession. Right at the centre of it sits our professional values
and ethics. The core values and ethics act as a constant for the profession, but the services we deliver, and therefore the skills needed, evolve over time. It is vital that the PKSB be reviewed to ensure it truly reflects the skills our services needed both now and in the future.” A group of experts from the profession, working with CILIP’s Head of Sector Development, will review and update the content. The revisions will be tested with the wider community, including leading employers and learning providers. The content revision has been partially supported by Health Education England as part of their Future Skills for the healthcare library and knowledge services workforce project and will be completed in 2020.
Cataloguing award goes to journal editor
DR Karen Pierce, Cataloguing Librarian at Cardiff University, is the recipient of the 2020 Alan Jeffreys Award, a biennial
award for a substantive contribution to the development, teaching or practice of cataloguing or indexing. Jenny Wright, of BDS, who nominated Karen, highlighted her sixyear tenure as editor of Catalogue & Index: “As cataloguers we sometimes lament that others do not value metadata sufficiently, and we strive to make ourselves and our work more visible. Karen’s dedication and effort as editor of C&I has been exemplary, and is of huge benefit to the profession. Having an active journal makes our work more visible to ourselves and others, and facilitates networking and rec ognition between professionals who often work in isolation.” The award was presented by the CILIP Metadata and Discovery Group, formerly the Cataloguing and indexing Group.
