The Rider Turns 50 Fifty years ago this

month, Aidan Finn brought to the horse world a revolu- tionary publication. His son, Barry, was involved from the start, selling papers at shows and events when he was as young as seven. Today, a few things have changed. Aidan has retired with Barry taking over as owner and editor, and the paper – aptly called “The Rider” - now encompasses all breeds of horses from all disciplines in the Ontario Horse industry.

in 1994 The Rider emerged from the combination of all three publications. In 2000, with greater access to computers and all their magic, The Rider got a face lift complete with new logo, punched up colour content and more story coverage. In 2005, Barry took over the paper completely. Many organizations have chosen The Rider as their official newsletter over the years. The Western Horse Association of Ontario and the Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario, Inc. have been there since the begin- ning and have since been joined by many other associa- tions.

Had To Be Ivory Wins Thrilling Renewal of Picov Maturity

AJAX DOWNS, WEDNESDAY JULY 2, 2020 - With a great show of grit, 2019 Horse of the Year HAD TO BE IVORY won the 8th running of the Picov Maturity on an exciting Canada Day of Quar- ter Horse racing at Ajax Downs. While there wasn’t the

huge crowd that annually visit Ajax Downs on this country’s birthday due to the COVID-19 pandemic keeping doors closed, fans watching on-line were treated to a fabulous finish which came down to four horses battling to the wire. Bet down to a heavy 3 to 5

favourite, Had to Be Ivory and his regular rider Tony Phillips broke a bit to the right from their rail post in the nine horse field but quickly grabbed the lead. A host of the track’s top older horses
