14/ JULY 2020 THE RIDER

By Debra Moore. With circumstances being what

they are, I asked if anyone would be in- terested in doing a virtual trail ride for Breast Cancer, other groups seem to have amazing success with running a virtual ride. I presented the following quest: This would still be the Trail Ride

for Breast Cancer which was to hap- pen Aug 8th 1. Cost would be $40.00 which would include $25.00 donation receipt from Kelly Shire Breast Cancer Foundation and a trail ride t-shirt (and possibly a goody bag from various sponsors) 2. I would ask that you try to ride 7 miles, which is the length of the pink

trail at Dufferin forest. 3. Rides would take place anywhere you are comfortable riding at, with up to 10 riders in your group. Anytime between July 1st and Aug 7th Pictures would be a bonus. 4. We would still run the best dressed horse and rider contests, best group dressed horses/riders picture required to qualify for prizes 5. Contest for highest pledges and fur- thest location of a rider participating in the ride, youngest rider. 6. I would create another Facebook page so everyone can add pictures and keep up to date with other riders. 7. Everyone that enters/registers will

By Tracy Galvin. In this column last

month I wrote that the OXC is not only a fast-paced and fun sport, its also a commu- nity that supports each other. Since I wrote that, we haven’t been able to hold any of our races yet this sea- son, but we sure have shown our true colours. In early June, OXC

member Ellie Ross was thrilled at the safe arrival of what she calls “the most perfect foal.” But six hours

later she found the gorgeous chestnut filly unresponsive and rushed her in the cab of the truck with the mare in the trailer to the Ontario Veterinary College emer- gency. It was determined that she had suffered trauma in the hours after her birth, split her diaphragm and her intestines had spilled into her chest cavity. This is an extremely rare injury with a high mortality rate and is al- ways fatal without an exten- sive surgical procedure.

on this beautiful filly, Ellie decided to move forward with the surgery and, facing a substantial vet bill, she reached out to her commu- nity, including her many friends and competitors in the OXC and its parent or- ganization, Cowboy

the Extreme Association

(EXCA), to help save this precious foal. The commu- nity responded immedi- ately; a crowd-funder was started, people called with their support, and the sur- gery went ahead. Ellie named her foal

Miss Kitty because a cat is said to have nine lives and Diana McMurtrey, a top Level 5 EXCA judge and good friend to the OXC, had advised Ellie to always give foals a name that you want them to live up to. Miss Kitty made it through her surgery with flying colours but was so remarkably ac- tive on Day 2 that she tore her repair and was back where she started. The sec- ond surgery was long — the original incision was her en- tire midline and had to be reopened — and this time her large intestine was in her chest.

Day 3 and 4 brought Miss Kitty - Foal Emergency Miss Kitty

more drama with fluid being drained from her chest, fluid in her abdomen and round- the-clock care needed to

prevent her from pulling out her oxygen and IV lines. Whenever Ellie felt she might be fighting a losing battle she sat with Miss Kitty and saw this bright, active – very active! – filly with a remarkable will to live and knew she was doing the right thing. And the community agreed; do- nations poured in from OXC and EXCA members, and from other horse and non-horse friends. Some donated a second time after the second surgery become necessary, CW Quarter- horses donated and deliv- ered a load of hay, The Riverbend Grill in Glen

Morris ran a Cookies and Cupcakes for Miss Kitty fundraiser and even people Ellie had never met sent their support and prayers. After a week under the

excellent care of the OVC, Miss Kitty came home and is as active and bright as ever. As Ellie says, “How could I put a price on a life? By coming together, we saved a life. A brilliant vet team, the OXC and a wider community of folks that be- lieved in saving her life, a filly with the strongest will to live and a flood of prayers and energy that beat the odds.

I’ve made new

friends, strengthened exist- ing friendships and renewed my faith in miracles. I can’t say enough good things about the OVC care and es- pecially Dr. Memo Arroyo – thank you all!” The OXC is excited to

announce our Monthly Give-Away winners. There are more prizes still to win; to be eligible all you have to do is become an OXC mem- ber – visit our website or so- cial media sites for the link to membership and join in on the fun! Our July prize is a Custom Pencil Drawing, donated by Artist Terri Rowling. Join our wonder-

ful community and you could win! The winner of our May
