HOVETON, WROXHAM AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB I hope everyone is keeping well and obeying instructions by the government, at least things have eased a bit since last month. Although the garden looks as tidy as it has ever been, I do miss not being able to go for a cuppa and scone or meeting with friends, it is not quite the same having to be 2 meters apart but to get rid of this ghastly virus we must obey the rules.
By now you should have received 2 geraniums per member, please look after them and if we do have a meeting later in the year do bring the best of them along for a competition, Jean won it last year with her giagnormous plant, she must have had several conversations with it for it to be so splendid!!!
Look after yourselves and we hope to see you in the not too distant future. Pam
GARDENING TIPS FOR JUNE How are you all coping? I hope you are all well. Most of our spring flowers are going over, especially after the warm weather we have just had. Ceanothus, rhododendrons, camassias, roses and brooms are giving a good display. All of the summer bedding should be planted out and start giving you plenty of pleasure. Keep them fed and watered regularly. The ideal time to do this is very early in the morning or early evening. Hoe your beds regularly and keep dead heading, especially roses. Spray areas like patios, shingle paths and drives on a still dry day with a glyphosate based weed killer. Keep cutting lawns, it’s been quite a dry time for lawns. Spray a selective weed killer, to reduce any weeds in the lawn, and feed if required. In the salad area sow, at intervals, lettuce, radish, spring onions and oriental leaves. In the veg area your climbing beans should be doing well. Sow beetroot, carrots and peas. In the fruit area, protect your bushes with nets. Harvest your strawberries. Keep your pond topped up with water. Feed fish regularly and protect them from herons. Remember, any newly planted trees, shrubs, hedges and seeded lawns need to be kept watered, especially during dry conditions. Enjoy your gardening during these difficult times. When you are out on your walks look around and notice the flowers, plants and wildlife that surround you. Take care. Michael Ottaway, Chairman
