Beyond the Sanitary Crisis J

by Carlos Olabe, EICF Executive Director

ust a couple of weeks ago, Europe was looking in the distance at the problems arising in China associated with the pandemic of Covid-19 and being amazed of the drastically imposed measures to the circulation of people and the impact on the normal activity of companies and the manufacturing industry.

Today Europe is in the middle of a similar situation and many European countries have established directives of confinement for individuals and slow down or sanitary lockdown for companies and manufacturing plants. It is understood that health for individuals is the top priority but the uncertainty in the economic outcome of this pandemic is at the same time an issue affecting the wellbeing of individuals and society. Although the crisis is affecting differently within the different countries of Europe the interdependency of the economy and markets results in the end in a general problem affecting the industry sector of the Investment Casting. The EICF has conducted a questionnaire among the EICF members in order to get a picture of how this crisis is affecting the normal activity and how the companies are facing the sanitary crisis and its effect into operations. The first question shows the overall impact assessment on operations. The conclusion is very clear most

company operations are being affected either highly or partially. Relative to the sources of the

operations disruption. It can be seen that there are similar effects coming from lack of personnel and from reduction of orders. Some initial observation into lack of sustained material supply are also indicated. Also, the communication with customers are becoming more difficult as visits have interrupted or meetings are being held via videoconferencing. Another relevant aspect versus

Governmental lockdown decisions is the classification of Essential industry or not.
