on stage this month
by brad hart ASSASSINS The nation’s most notori- Comic genius Ken Ludwig’sMoon Over Buffalo is
coming to Coronado Playhouse fromFriday, March 20 through Sunday, April 19. In the madcap comedy tradition ofLend Me a Tenor,Moon Over Buffalo centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950s. At the moment, they’re playingPrivate Lives andCyrano de Bergerac in rep in Buffalo, New York. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a pretty ingénue, they receive word that they might get one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake ofThe Scarlet Pimpernel. Everything that could go wrong does go wrong, abetted by a visit from their daughter’s clueless fiancé and hilarious uncertainty about which play they’re actually performing, caused by Charlotte’s deaf, old stage-manager mother who hates every bone in George’s body. With a plethora of pratfalls, slamming doors aplenty, and backstage shenanigans,Moon Over Buffalo is a fast-paced, hilarious screwball comedy in the old tradition, and a valentine to the stage and the larger-than-life personalities that inhabit the world of the theatre. Fun fact:The 1995 production marked the triumphant return of Carol
Burnett to the Broadway stage, after a 30-year absence. That year, Burnett received a Tony Award nomination for her role as Charlotte Hay.

Anthony Giardina’s play is a fascinating and timely look at family politics through a family in politics. In 1979, Washington, D.C. was a place where people still talked to each other, and where adversaries fought it out on the Senate floor and then smoothed it out over drinks and hors d’oeuvres. But it was all about to change. In this plot spanning 30 years and six presi- dentialadministrations, Hester Ferris throws
Georgetown dinner parties that can change the course of Washington’s politics. But when her beloved son suddenly turns up with an ambitious Reaganite girlfriend and a shocking new conservative worldview, Hester must choose between preserving her family and defending the causes she has spent her whole life fighting for.
