Angel and Callumbus take under-16 honours

P James Whitaker and Caloro Ex Z

James Whitaker heads under-25s grand prix

at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show on Saturday evening. James, younger brother of Great Britain Nations Cup rider William Whitaker, took top honours in the Under-25s Grand Prix. It was a stylish performance in a class that produced just three clear rounds from 18 starters. Ultimately, it proved to be a showdown between James on Caloro Ex Z and Robert Murphy, riding Highgrove Violet.

J

Robert followed his first round clear with another immaculate display, clocking 43.25 seconds, but James clipped half a second off that time to claim a £2,000 winner’s purse. Harry Wainwright and Pinheiro Beech finished third, with leading Irish challengers Jason Foley and Castlefield Cass in fourth.

Reflecting on his victory, James said: “It’s absolutely fantastic. We didn’t have the best of weeks in a show the week before Liverpool, but we came back and tried hard, and luckily it paid off. You have got to learn from your mistakes, and we’ve both done that and got a great result from it. It was a tough course. There were only three clears in the end, and luckily it played into my hands a little bit. I wasn’t last to go (in the jump-off), so I didn’t have loads of pressure, but I put enough pressure on the last to go to have a fence down, so it worked out perfectly for me.

“We’ve only been together for about four or five months. We’ve won a couple of classes, so we are slowly getting together, and hopefully next year we will have a good year. It’s fantastic to win here at Liverpool, and I can finish the year on a high now.”

In front of a big crowd, Lily stormed to victory with Karibou Horta, clocking 58.19 seconds and collecting just over £4,000. Lilly finished second in Saturday’s speed class behind

Guy, but this time she was clear of the field. Ireland’s Daniel Coyle took second aboard Donjo in 59.51 seconds, being closely followed by Billy Twomey and Lady Lou in third, while Shane Breen and Clintofino was fourth.

“I saw Daniel go and I thought he was really fast,” Lily said. “My horse is very naturally quick, so I went on a forward seven strides to the last, and it paid off. I have

had him a year now. He is a nine year old, so he is still a bit inexperienced in these types of atmospheres. But he has really excelled himself and he jumped phenomenally at Liverpool. I think he is a very good speed horse. I have learnt most of what I know from Guy this year, and to win a class here at Liverpool is fantastic.”

rolific Liverpool winner Angel Tough came up trumps once again to

land the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show under-16 title. Manchester-based Angel won two classes at the inaugural Liverpool Show in 2015, and she has continued her impressive progression ever since. So much so, that she was part of the gold medal-winning Great Britain children on horses team at the 2017 European Championships in Slovakia, riding her latest Liverpool champion Callumbus.

Angel had to really work for victory, with 15 combinations from 23 starters making the jump-off and ensuring a fast and furious battle for top spot. Their time of 27.73 seconds was almost a second quicker than the rest, though, with North Yorkshire’s Hannah Barker finishing second on Cartouche II, LIla Bremner and Cocktail D’Azur taking third and Ava Vernon on Jolie Fleur van de Noordheuval finishing fourth.

Reflecting on her Liverpool success story, Angel said: “The first year, I won two classes here on a pony owned by my grandad, and apart from last year, I have won a class at Liverpool every year. It is my last year at under-16 level. We won a gold medal in 2017, and he (Callumbus) has won pretty much everything, really. He always pulls it out of the bag. You can spin him on the spot, and he just loves it. I love this show. It is one of my favourites, and if I could go to any show, it would be this one.”
