Training Setting a challenge
Whether you have an older established horse or a novice just starting their education, a great jumping exercise is to build a grid of a small upright to a cross pole, one bounce stride to another cross pole then a small upright. Jump through the line of fences ensuring at the end you don’t cut any corners and that you ride to the very end of the school. Alternate turning left or right and approach the upright that is built on the angle, landing and riding forward using all the space you have available.
Alter the height of the fences as you feel more confident
The distances through the jumps in the centre of the school will ensure your horse uses his hocks correctly to jump and as you will have to think ahead, you will need to ensure you are riding in a forward, balanced rhythm at all times. Make the decision of which way you are going to turn before approaching the line of jumps, as this will make you ride in a controlled fashion and will allow you time to balance your horse before turning back to the fence on the angle.
Grids can help a horse that tends to rush their fences
Always start with fences at a height you are happy with, as that will allow you to ride without feeling worried. You will need impulsion to get through the grid and take your time after the grid to correct your canter lead if necessary. The single fence on the angle also encourages you to think ahead and your horse to stay balanced, so he is encouraged to land on the correct canter lead before moving away.
Don’t be tempted to turn too tightly after the grid. Use the whole arena as it will give you more time to adjust and remain in a good rhythm. This exercise is also great for horses that get excited about jumping or anticipate the fence, as they have to wait and listen to your instructions about where they are to go.
* Measurements given will vary from horse to horse, including length of stride, training, rider’s ability, size of fence so it is important to know your own horse’s stride length, and that you can walk distances correctly.
Each time you jump through the grid ensure you alternate turning left and right
