News from the Zetland Hunt Pony Club Have a go at Triathlon

D

id you know you can now be a member of the Zetland Hunt Pony Club

even if you don’t have a pony? From January 2020 the Pony Club introduced a ‘non-riding’ membership which means you can join and take part in all activities throughout the year.

Do you like swimming and running and would like to have a go at target shooting? If so, you may be interested in triathlon. There are four age categories, known as tadpoles (under eights), minimus, (eight to 11), junior (12 to 14) and senior (15 to 21), and boys and girls compete together. There is no

minimum qualification standard to compete. At the end of the games, rosettes are awarded to the top scores in each discipline, for the highest overall scores, and for the best team performances in each category.

In the under eights, you’d be expected to run 500m, swim for two minutes and throw beanbags at a target as a form of shooting. From the age of eight, competitors are required to shoot at stationary targets using 177 calibre air pistols from a range of seven or 10 metres, depending on their age. Younger (minimus) competitors are allowed to use two hands while older

competitors must use only one. Ten shots are fired under timed conditions with a maximum of four seconds allowed per shot.

Competitors are required to swim freestyle, a distance appropriate for their age and the level at which they are competing. Swimming is scored on a grid of age, level and time.

Competitors run a cross-country under timed conditions. Distances are 500 metres, 1,000 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres depending upon age category. Runners do not run against each other directly as in a marathon or race; instead

Winners of the 70cm W

e held our annual New Year unaffiliated show jumping event at

Richmond Equestrian Centre on 3rd January, organised by Sarah Clark.

There were more than 130 entries for the event, with classes from 30cm to 1m. Open to all, it was well attended with many additional entries taken on the day. Ran as a single phase competition, the rider had to jump six fences and if clear, they progressed to the second half of six fences, which was timed, resulting in the fastest, clear combination winning.

The smooth running of the day was aided by Donna Wood and her team, commentary and course design by Rennie Wood and young assistant Max Riley Fox. We would wish to thank the great number of people involved

and a large number of volunteers and parents helped out in order to make the day a success.

A special thank you to the show jumping class sponsors, local businesses who have supported the Zetland Hunt Pony Club and donated such generous prizes for each category.
