Pharmacist of the Year
SUPPORTED BY EVAN REID
Hendersons Pharmacy, Coleraine Located near three large housing estates, Evan is only too aware of the health needs of the local demographic and works to build on and reinforce community spirit. Over the years, he has been heavily involved in a range of projects designed to help his local patients with physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. As a result, he has worked in partnership with other local community voluntary organisations, such as Women's Aid, Citizens Advice Bureau and Connect to educate local patients and to strengthen their mental health.
MARIA MCGUINNESS
Belleek Pharmacy, Belleek Maria has been providing a full range of pharmacy services for her village for more than 30 years. She is recognised as a local healthcare expert and is invited to give health promotion talks to a wide range of groups, including young mothers, the elderly etc. She also has a strong one-to-one patient focus. Over the years, she has undertaken many innovative projects both by herself and in supervising others, including medicines use review protocol for nursing homes, in-pharmacy diabetes testing and bisphosphonate research.
MARY MCBRIDE
Portglenone Pharmacy, Portglenone When Mary first joined Portglenone Health Centre, she observed that there was a high number of patients on opioids for chronic pain. She realised that these patients needed reviewed and worked with the Practice Manager and GPs to bring these patients in for review/assessment. Mary also realised that safety audits were required for patients on dual anti-platelet therapy and so she started reviewing patients, and those patients who were on bisphosphonates for the treatment of osteoporosis. She also spoke to the local community pharmacists and, together, they were able to encourage people to attend for review.
SARAH MCBRIDE
Kennedys Pharmacy, Dunloy Sarah and her pharmacy team had identified health inequalities in the local area and so set up a range of initiatives to support the local community. Through her involvement with a local community group, CONTACT, Sarah worked to improve the health and wellbeing of local mothers who care for a son/daughter with a disability and/or life-limiting condition. Sarah attended weekly sessions with the group and performed ten different health-related talks, as well as attending and promoting days held by other local community groups and organisations.
