Innovation in Community Pharmacy Practice

SUPPORTED BY BELCOO PHARMACY

Fermanagh Belcoo Pharmacy is a family-run pharmacy established in 2001. Located in the small village of Belcoo, and with the local GP having moved out of the village, the nearest GP surgery is now eight miles away and so the pharmacy has become an essential link in the chain of medical services within the region. When staff member Bridgeen had to care for her father, who had dementia, the community rallied around. Pharmacy owner, Joe McAleer, decided that the pharmacy would become a ‘dementia-friendly’ pharmacy and would find innovative ways of raising awareness of this terrible disease. The pharmacy held an in-house training evening with the local dementia team to train all staff in dementia awareness, which gave everyone a better understanding of the condition.

CAMPBELL'S PHARMACY

Portrush Campbell’s recently refitted the entire building to allow the staff to redeploy its entire dispensing process over three floors. A new dispensary was established on the first and second floors with a robot on the first and silent dispensary on the second floor to improve patient safety and staff wellbeing. Over the last 17 years, the team recognised that it could not continue to look after a growing clientele in the premises as they were. What was needed was a safer layout over three floors. As a result, there is now a pharmacist-facing open dispensing space downstairs, where one or more pharmacists can engage with patients while the ancillary staff are carrying out the mechanical aspects of the dispensing.

MAGHABERRY PHARMACY

Maghaberry Recently, in response to alarm raised about the environmental damage caused by traffic on our roads, Maghaberry Pharmacy decided to invest in an electric bicycle for deliveries. Back in 2012, Aubrey Penney – the company’s Logistics Operator - led the way to health improvement and environmental protection. Despite the positive feedback, however, the hills around Maghaberry resulted in slow, tiring and a time- inefficient collection and delivery system. Now, however, it has been decided to get Aubrey an electric bicycle. This will both assist in the environmental and health improvements that cycling for prescription collection and delivery could achieve for the pharmacy team, but will also lead to cost reduction in petrol and wear and tear on the delivery car for the business.
