The primary purpose of community pharmacy is to deliver high quality care to all. Through a series of roadshows in January 2019, the Chief Pharmacist, Marc Donovan, highlighted that, whilst improvements in technology and processes will always help strengthen safety, research demonstrates that human factors contribute to over 70 per cent of incidents across a wide range of business sectors. Training in the wider safety industry has since evolved to reflect this. The decision was therefore made to devote the afternoon session at pharmacists’ and pharmacy technicians’ ‘Let’s Connect’ conferences in spring 2019 to this topic. In developing pharmacists’ interventions, it was important that pharmacy staff were able to discuss the strengths/limits of human behaviour and understand how these limits can lead to errors in the practice of pharmacy.


THE HEALTH CENTRE PHARMACY


Carrickfergus The Health Centre Pharmacy’s Carrickfergus relationship with the community/voluntary sector - such as the Mid & East Antrim Agewell Partnership (MEAAP) - has been developing through the IMPACTAgewell® Project, a multidisciplinary cooperative involving general practice, the community pharmacy network, local council, Integrated Care Partnerships, primary and secondary care colleagues and commissioners. All partners involved in the IMPACTAgewell® Project recognised the lack of knowledge around older people living with frailty and the approach to calculating the ‘clinical frailty’ in older people. Between January and February 2019, four community pharmacists from Health Centre Pharmacy, Carrickfergus received training from the Consultant Pharmacist (Older People) Medicines Optimisation in Older People (MOOP) network on how to apply the ‘Rockwood Clinical Frailty Score’ to identify older people living with frailty.


WELL PHARMACY


Ballygomartin Due to the nature of John Waide's job as a relief pharmacist, he has been able to assist all those who are currently progressing through their NVQ2 qualification. John has addressed training and development needs by taking the initiative to do this himself, as he knows exactly how to mentor a trainee, having gone through this qualification himself. Last year, John also underwent personal development by successfully completing his ACT course, which he sought out and paid for himself, as he wanted to further his own career. This has been a great help to all of the branches in which John works and eases the pressure. John also now assists his regional manager with regard to internal training and maintaining SOPs.
