Working in Partnership

SUPPORTED BY HENDERSON’S PHARMACY

Coleraine Pharmacy owner, Evan Reid, fully understands the health needs of the local demographic and works to reinforce community spirit. Over the years, he has been heavily involved in a range of initiatives and projects designed to help his local patients with their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Last year, Evan was approached by a local community organisation (Ashes to Gold) to work collaboratively on a BCPP project and, for some of the sessions, he also teamed up with his local GP, Dr Paul Martin.

MCCARTANS PHARMACY

Newry The Southern Trust area has 260 children who are affected by Type 1 diabetes. Gemma McCartan has a particular interest in Type 1 diabetes having been personally affected by a family tragedy. As a result, Gemma undertook to work in partnership with TIDCAT: a community organisation that works to support children and teenagers - and their families - who are coping with Type 1 diabetes. Gemma focussed on building a network of people who have the necessary experience to support children and teenagers affected by the condition.

NORTHERN PHARMACIES LTD

Holywood Northern Pharmacies created a new role - community palliative care pharmacist - following an application from the management of the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast for funding to help improve pharmacy services within the palliative care setting. The support of a pharmacist able to administer medication and offer clinical advice is vital to patients and their families living with a terminal illness, and so the company now employs a pharmacist for three days a week to work in the hospice.

TURF LODGE PHARMACY

Belfast Turf Lodge Pharmacy is located in an area, which is designated as of targeted social need. Voices Women's group asked pharmacist Jarlath McCarthy to partner with them on a BCPP project, which focussed on a group of older women suffering from multiple inequalities, including low income and poor physical and mental health. As part of the project Jarlath also partnered with Holy Trinity Youth Centre in an attempt to remove the barrier of fear caused by an upsurge in anti-social activity.
