W The SouthWest Chat

elcome to the December issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. The futurities are in full swing with the draws narrowed down and we are days away from the final

events which will name the best 3 year olds for 2019. For those not showing in the futurities, 2020 goals are

being set and for many stock show entries have already been sent. I personally just took a year off and my biggest goal is to make time to ride my horse. This past month I saw myself making large life changes

once again. I recently spent a year in north Texas in what I hoped would have been a great change. The reality of the change didn’t quite meet the picture in my head. The upside, I met so many new people, weekend associations, and busi- ness contacts. On the downside, my horse was 90 minutes away and everything in north Texas revolves around horses. I then received a phone call that once again gave me an

opportunity for change. As many of you already know, I have worked for Nettles Stirrups for many years from sell- ing stirrups to advertising campaigns and many special proj- ects in between. I received a call from Ronnie Nettles himself asking if I could please come work out of the office. I’ve know Gala and Ronnie for 20 years. They are like family and have stood next to me during some of my darkest days. When Ronnie calls, you say, “Yes sir, I’m on my way.” I then received a call from Tommie Powell. Pepper and

him had recently purchased Silver Horse Ranch in Bryan. If I needed a place to live, they had an empty rental. Tommy and Pepper have been great friends for years and I thank them for the opportunity to live here. What a nice facility, neighborhood and great boarders. As if this puzzle was putting itself together, the parts started coming together. My childhood friend had called

The SouthWest’s Marketing Guide for the Equine Industry

mid-October asking if I’d like a visit. This was a few weeks before I knew all of this was going to happen. Dale arrived November 7 and I moved south on the 9th. Let me tell you, I would never had been able to make this move without her. It wasn’t all smooth going. But she was like a rock and kept me focused and posi- tive and was a trooper. How many of you, have friends who come for vacation and end up help- ing you move? Thank you Dale. Her only request was that I go get my horse

and bring her here immediately. She was so adamant that I negotiated DFW with a Living Quarters Horse Trailer to drop her off. For those that have been to DFW, I hear your laughter. Yes, it was a bit tight. And I even had to laugh when she was navigating with Google Maps and insisting I turn left and I insisting that I can’t. She finally looks up and says, “Oh my.” Yes, you can’t fit a LQ Horse Trailer in the parking garage or cut through the garage to get to your drop-off location. Always override Google Maps when the directions forget that you are not in a passenger car. So I’m settling in and Ruby is with me. I’m

still figuring out everything. Just as the 3 year olds are improving with every run, I’m gaining confidence each day as well. Good luck to everyone showing at the futurities. I can’t wait to report the results next month! w
