Village ‘under pressure’ over A249 roundabout
A PARISH council leader claims his community is being pres- surised to withdraw objections to a major infrastructure change to the A249 at Stockbury. Villagers concede a proposed roundabout for the M2 is needed, but worry the Highways England project will split the village in two, without providing any safe access to it and its businesses. Parish council chairman Phil Woods has received a letter from the government agency, suggest- ing if it does not drop its opposi- tion, the project may lose its funding and development win- dow. Cllr Phil Woods said: “It appears
Kent County Council and Maid- stone Borough Council have both been persuaded to withdraw their objections. Now Highways Eng- land has written suggesting if we do not withdraw ours, and a pub- lic inquiry goes ahead, then we could be responsible for forfeiting
the whole project. “As a parish council, we are used
to taking such accusations, but a resident whose home will be bull- dozered by the project has received a similar letter, and that’s not on.”
The parish council says it would
be happy to withdraw its objection, but villagers will need to be as- sured by Highways England and the Department for Transport that a bridge or an underpass will be part of the final scheme. He added: “This road is already treacherously dangerous at this point. We want the road improved, but as those bearing the brunt of these changes, Highways England must take the needs of the village into account. “We do not want to stand in the
way of this road scheme, but we also don’t want to be risking life and limb to get into and out of Stockbury. There needs to be a safe way we can reach both sides of the village.” Highways England said: “We understand the parish council’s de- sire for a bridge or underpass at this location, but it is outside the scope of our project and, if in- cluded, would make the scheme unaffordable.”
