BOXLEY PARISH COUNCILLORS AND STAFF WISH ALL OUR PARISHIONERS A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
Pond clean-up A REQUEST has been made to help fund the emptying of silts traps on the stream at the Vinters Valley Trust wildlife reserve. The traps ensure silt and toxins do
not reach the lake, but have not been cleaned out for 15 years, said VVT representative Chris Jones. The water quality is being made
worse from increased traffic causing chemicals to be washed through, ex- traction from the aquifers and run-off from the M20, Cllr Tony Harwood told members. The likely bill for the silt trap emp- tying will be about £2,800. The parish council resolved to
send the matter to its finance com- mittee for further examination. Members thanked the volunteers of VVT for their work.
Traffic talk
A MEETING was held with KCC’s Jennie Watson to discuss traffic is- sues and a Highway Improvement Plan (HIP) has been set up. Walderslade Woods A speed reduc- tion to 50mph would be supported, with improvements to the islands. Traffic surveys would be carried out to identify other solutions and fund- ing sought. Provender Way A site visit will be carried out and recommendations made. Ideas suggested part-time 20mph zone, flashing speed indica- tor signs and extended school no parking areas. Harp Farm Road “Unsuitable for HGV”(except for access) signs to be installed. Flooding problem should be done within the next couple of months Weavering Street Additional “slow” markings and existing ones refreshed. Grange Lane To be monitored, but not a priority.
Lease agreed
THE parish council has agreed to sign the lease on the Franklin Drive play area. The Environment Committee confirmed Network Rail had no record of having right of way over the land and wanted to get the lease signed so that the play equipment could be installed.

Parish acts after a Halloween ‘horror’
BOXLEY Parish Council is to try to set up a meeting of key agencies after a night of Halloween antiso- cial behaviour. Members related stories of young
people in the Grove Green and Weavering Heath areas throwing missiles at cars, uprooting plants and causing criminal damage on October 31.
Residents reported being spat at,
pelted with ketchup, flour and eggs and having bins tipped onto the street. The council has heard reports of houses being targeted, as well as fireworks being set off in inappro- priate locations. Porch displays were destroyed and fencing pulled up as
youths ran amok in the area, with minimal police intervention. Cllr Wendy Hinder (pictured)
said: “Anyone who intervened was verbally abused by these youngsters. By all accounts, it was horrendous.” A resident asked the parish council
to organise a meeting to thrash out the issues with the relevant agencies. Councillors generally agreed that the authority has limited powers, but should try to be the conduit. One member said the police should
be compelled to attend and explain their position. The county and bor- ough councils have experts in the fields of community safety and youth services, said Cllr Tony Harwood.
BOXLEY Parish Council would like to give a warm welcome to Jane Den- ham, pictured above, who has joined the team at the Parish Council office in Walderslade.
Council opposes care home plan
A PROPOSED application for a care home on a busy roundabout near the Kent Medical Campus site has been opposed by Boxley Parish Council. The scheme would have access
to Bearsted Road and there would be landscaping, parking and asso- ciated works. Chairman Bob Hinder raised the council’s concerns, such as visibil- ity when travelling east and that the site is too small for the size of
the intended complex. MBC considered that Weavering
Heath is an integral part of the landscape buffer south of the Bearsted Road. This development would have the potential for re- moval of this buffer and is one of the grounds for objection. There is still a “live” objection
from KCC regarding the proposed access from Bearsted Road and there have been substantive and ongoing arguments from KCC
Highways to this application. Cllr Hinder said: “When asked
by the developers team whether KCC would undertake another public consultation regarding the proposed road improvements for that area, the answer again from KCC was an emphatic no.” Parish councillors pointed out
how close the site is to Weavering Heath and the Vinters valley Na- ture Reserve, ongoing concerns about traffic flows and pollution.
Work day on
allotments THE team had another very suc- cessful day on the allotments at Dove Hill, installing paving slabs under the water troughs to sta- bilise them. A huge thank you goes to the
councillors and volunteers who took part.
